Message from Superintendent Saunders

I know it's Teacher Appreciation Week, but we appreciate our teachers and staff each and every day.  We appreciate that they take the time to inspire, encourage, nurture and grow the 3,200 students that make up the Marquette Area Public Schools.

It’s also fitting that I announce today the district award winners for our 6-12 Teacher of the Year, our Elementary Teacher of the Year, and our Support Staff of the Year.

Our MAPS Support Staff Person of the Year is Jennifer Snyder. Jenn is an Instructional Program Aide at Marquette Senior High School. Jenn works in the FSP room where her colleagues and co-workers rave about her fantastic attitude, positivity, and enthusiasm for the students she works with and the work she does.

Our MAPS Elementary Teacher of the Year is Nicole Heidtman. Nicole is an early childhood special education teacher at Superior Hills. Nicole is dedicated, thoughtful, hard working and deeply cares about each of her students and families. She goes above and beyond her contractual duties, is a team player, and assists fellow co-workers in tasks, training, and with words of encouragement.

Our MAPS 6-12 Teacher of the Year is Tom Seeke. Tom is a math teacher at Marquette Senior High School. Tom is a veteran teacher who makes math fun. He is a very caring person who is always willing to work with students. During a normal school year, Tom is seen after school every day tutoring all students in math; including students not assigned to his classes. A student once said, “Mr. Seeke is the smartest person I know."  He is flexible, good hearted, and is looked up to by his students and peers.

Thanks to all who nominated a colleague for this recognition. Each recipient will receive a $750 award, a plaque honoring this recognition, and their name permanently displayed on the MAPS website under Teacher and Staff Recognition.

Please join me in reaching out and congratulating these outstanding MAPS professionals!!!
We’ll be honoring them, along with retirees from this last year, on June 3rd @ 5:00 p.m. on the high school football field.

On behalf of the Board of Education, MAPS administration, our students and the greater Marquette Community "Thank You" to MAPS teachers and staff for your dedication and commitment to educating our youth.

William Saunders,
