MAPS Influenza Information
February 2010
The Marquette Area Public School District has been working in conjunction with the Marquette County Health Department in response to the recommendations for schools regarding seasonal influenza and H1N1.
Through a grant from the Health Department, hand soap and flu posters have been distributed in every school. In addition, NMU senior student nurses, working in the schools through the nurse’s office have provided or will provide hand washing and flu prevention lessons to every grade level. The lessons will be age appropriate for children. If a child has flu like symptoms with a fever of 100 degrees or more, the health department has asked us to place a mask on the child (masks have been provided by the Health Department) and call the parents to have their child picked up. If an adult or child gets the flu and the family is uninsured or underinsured, the Health Department has Tamiflu available free of charge to families whose doctors recommend it.
We have worked with the Marquette County Health Department and completed flu clinics in every one of our schools. Currently the Health Department has plenty of Seasonal flu vaccine and H1N1 available and are holding flu clinics at the health department every other week. You can make an appointment by calling 475- 7844. You can also get vaccines at the office of your private physician.
Remember, the one most important thing you and your child can do to prevent the flu is to wash your hands often.
